Assuming that CJ Rehnquist is going to retire soon, there
is a lot a speculation as to who the next Chief Justice
will be. The media is assuming it will be Scalia or Thomas
since George Bush is considered a strict constructionist.
I have a different prediction. I predict that David Souter
will be the next CJ. I think this because 1.) G.Bush's
father appointed him, and Bush the younger is transfixed by
anything his father did. 2.) Souter is really non
controversial. Even though some conservatives call him
liberal he is in fact conservative on most issues other
than personal moral issues and would probably have a
moderating influence. 3.) There is no scandal associated
with him, no real controversy, he has no enemies, he would
sail through the confirmation just like he did the first
time.
