Also many states will refuse a gun permit if the applicant has a conviction for any crime of violence even if it is just misdemeanor assault or threatening. (I don't know if Illinois does) Here is the relevant part of a typical statute of that sort. ********************************************** Ownership or possession prohibited, when; (b) No person who is under indictment for, or has waived indictment for, or has been bound over to the circuit court for, or has been convicted in this State or elsewhere of having committed a felony, or any crime of violence, or an illegal sale of any drug shall own, possess, or control any firearm or ammunition therefor. [A crime of violence is defined by the statute as:] "Crime of violence" means any offense, that involves injury or threat of injury to the person of another.
