It is true that the VA reports benefit recipients who receive
benefits because of mental health issues; you don't need proof of
that. Even private shrinks can and will report patients who they
believe should be disqualified from owning guns. It is a
difficult situation for people who just need some professional
counseling about life's problems. It is not only guns that a
shrink can and will report on. For example; a pilot who has some
issues and seeks counseling may end up with his medical
certificate suspended or revoked because the shrink reports him to
the FAA. Another example is a bar application. Many bar
applications require you to sign a "medical records release form"
that allows the bar to look into your medical records. If you
refuse to sign the release, your application will not be
considered. If there is a "mental health history" in your records
the bar may require a current "mental health evaluation" before
    they will consider your application.

Most people do not realize that once you see a shrink for any
reason you will forever have a "mental health history." The sad
reality is that if you see a shrink, you will likely give up some
rights you previously had and be open to allegations of a "mental
health history" in the future. Even a minor criminal charge can
uncover mental health records. Don't be fooled by the belief that
mental health records are privileged and can not be revealed
without your permission. That is what the medical privilege law
apparently says but exceptions to the law make the law meaningless.

Shrinks are a very dangerous group. Their power and potential for
harm must not be underestimated. The truth is that everything you
say to a shrink can and likely will come back to haunt your
future. Like the Eagles song says: "You can check out anytime you
like, but you can never leave."

If you can avoid shrinks, do so. The risk of harm is much greater
than any possible benefit of talking to a shrink.
