When you post on a nationwide board seeking specific legal
advice, you need to state which state you were convicted in.
If you are pursuing this remedy pro se, chat boards are no
substitute for hitting the books. Use a search engine to find
more specific information, e.g. " [your state] and "restore
right to possess firearms". Contact your local court clerk
and ask if forms are available. You can also visit your state
legislature's website and review the firearm code. Typically
there will be a provision concerning prohibited persons, with
references to relief from disabilities. The remedies vary
from state to state: in some it is automatic, in others the
offender must file a petition in court or seek a pardon.
Generally, if you are clear in the state where prosecuted AND
have had your core civil rights restored, you will be good to go.
Many people accomplish this task without retaining an
attorney, but few do so without the benefit of legal
expertise, such as you are seeking now.
Good luck. If nothing else, try to view a file in which an
offender successfully regained the right to possess firearms.
It will show you what the pleadings look like and what may be
required of you.
