Post: Gun rights

In 2000 I was convicted by a military court and received 6 months (I served 3 months) in confinement. I was told by my military lawyer that this would have no effect on my gun, voting, etc. rights as the military does not differentiate between a felony and misdemeanor. I was given my guns back when I was released (1 handgun, 1 A15 rifle, and 1 shotgun). As of last year I purchased another handgun online and had it shipped to a local dealer where my info was taken down and ran through the system as part of my waiting period. There were delays and after 2 weeks I was told I was denied. The reason I was given was that I was convicted of a misdemeanor with a possible sentence over one year. Is this correct? I have been voting this whole time and have had no trouble with the law.
