    "Who is responsible for that balance-me as the policy
    holder, or her, as the patient?" Since you were married at
    the time, you're both responsible. If the collection agency
    can't get the money out of her, they're going to come after
    you. If neither of you pay, eventually they'll get a
    judgement and start garnishing wages - whether yours, hers,
    or both. I suggest you get this debt paid one way or
    another before that happens. You don't want that on your
    credit history.
