Sure they can! You're in default on your loan and, from your
post, only attempted to contact them AFTER you defaulted.
Most lenders don't take kindly to this. They can cash your
checks because you owed them the money; they can take the car
because you defaulted on the loan and still owe them money
and yes, they are ignoring your letter(s) because they want
to speak to you and tell you what THEY want, not what you
want to give them.
Call them IMMEDIATELY!!! It may help, it may not but it's
worth a try...
PS - What do you mean by "as soon as I found out and realized
I had missed payments"? You know you missed payments.
