I currently work as an appellate clerk. JD is required for a clerk position in any court in our state. Clerks are all recent law school grads. Most clerks take the bar exam in July after graduation and have not yet been admitted to the bar yet when they start their clerkship. Clerkship is normally for one year starting in September. Salary is currently $55K per year for appellate clerks and a little less for trial court clerks. Hours are often long but the work experience is invaluable for future work as a practicing attorney. Most successful clerks move to associate positions with top local firms after their year is up. Duties of appellate clerks include bailiffing at oral argument and writing bench memos for the justices on appellate cases. A bench memo is the result of research on the points of appeal and a recommendation written in the style of a final opinion, including appropriate citation to law. If you do your job right, bench memos are often published as final opinions with little change.
