Post: Reprinting Musical Artwork and Advertisement

Posted by Edward Collins on 3/21/12
I am assisting an author in completing a book chronicling
commercial musical recordings from the 50's to the 90's. I
need to research the probability of publishing or
self-publishing all record jacket art and advertisements
that are referenced in the manuscript. Obviously, there are
copyright issues and most likely rights will need to be
researched per piece. But are there exceptions?
Much work before 1964 is possibly eligible for use under an
expiration clause. Since the book is a musical review over
decades, are there any review clauses that can constitute
"Fair Use"? Any tips would be helpful as there is much work
ahead. Thank you!
