KCM, I respect your attitude, but your view of a chatboard is too narrow. In its most narrow function, the OP asks a question and gets a response. Then he or she can go along their merry way to serve jail time, get a few home-made tattoos, commit new offenses, or whatever. Broadened one step, people facing similar problems might become educated. Tho, they will probably misinterpret, misapply and misjudge their entire situation. Broadened further, readers becoming enlightened and educated about the legal system generally. Yeah, right. This happens, but it's rare. Usually this phase collapeses in to the next widening sphere of chat. The final and most definitive aspect about any chatboard stems from its public nature. Anyone can post. Anyone can read. Anyone can respond. Such a climate is nothing like a law office. It is like comparing Jerry Springer to therapy within the confidential confines of a psychologist's office. It's just not the same. That's the final purpose -- entertainment for the masses. Chatboards become the daytime TV of the Internet. The posters are like the guests on Jerry Springer or Oprah. They expose their problems to the whole world in hope of solutions. They do get feedback. Readers and viewers become educated (in an ideal world) about issues. And readers and commentators far and wide amuse themselves at the posters' expense. In effect, they become the butt of a joke or the object of criticism, and they do it to themselves. So while you're feeling sorry for folks and asking others to abstain from judgment, I challenge you to empathize with the ones we hadn't discussed until now -- the masses who are entertained.
