Post: Self Defense, did i miss something?

So im in trial with my (20 year old) son who pleaded Self defense when he was walking in crosswalk tword an altercation. The older man took 4 fast stepsand hit him with cane accross the chest hard enough to knock him back. He grabbed the middle of the cane to stop the fall and the man let go of cane. The man then started punching him so he pulled him close like a hug so he couldnt hit him. my son then hit him with the cane and told him to stop he was crazy. My son stepped away and stazrted to grab his skatebord to leave as he grabbed it the man came at him with cane again. My son flung the board at him knocking him down. My son then yelled just stay down. got on his board and went home. The man filed charges on my son. my son went to trial. we thought everything was pretty good until prosecuter closing argument told lie after lie. His witness said that the can bent when the man hit my son accross the chest. He told the jurey my son bent it with his skateboard. Anywhy then we here of the lesser included thing after its all over and the jurey is getting ready to talk. When was i found not to be self defense? and what the heck is this lesser charges included thing . He was charged with third degree assault in the beginning. we turned down plea deal and i believe it was a week later his charges were amended to second degree assault. they found him not guilty second found guilty on 3rd snd the jurey stated that the would have went fourth if it didnt say intent. The only charge without intent was assault third. So here i am very upset. Where did this lesser included come from and when were we informed that he was not in self defence? his public defender didnt object at all. My son is a good guy never fought before or been introuble with the law except driving ticket. Now he is a felon for making sure his head was not bashed in. Omg i hate the law now. Any advice will be great!! thanks much
