Re: Driver Surcharge-Texas Transportation Code Ch.708

I was charged a surcharge and told to pay it because I got "points" and given a phone number in Austin that nobody ever picks up. As a matter of fact, it is usually busy, but occasionally the machine will pick up and hang up on you without any other options. I have even gone to the Austin office only to be turned away and told to call that same number. I have paid said surcharge and been charged another and another. $200+ each. Let me clarify that I have always had full coverage insurance and have taken care of any tickets I have ever gotten quite promptly. As an educated, responsible, English-speaking person, I can not fathom what someone else has had to go through. I'm thinking about getting a lawyer because I still cannot clear my name with these people. Ironically, I work for the emergency department and feel that improving our trauma system is important, but not by putting citizens under the bus without adequate personnel to deal with questions and provide information. We have a right to know why we are being charged and a right to speak with someone about it. The police officers will tell you nothing, the DPS will tell you to call the number. The number never works. What a scam people! If anyone knows a lawyer with experience in this matter, please post.
