    Post: unfair termination

    Posted by amanda on 1/11/06

I was terminated this morning because of a check I cashed
    against my account last year.
    My Story:
I work for a bank - in October of last year I had closed a
bank account where I do my banking and opened a new account
with that same bank. A few days later - not having received
my debit card for the new account, I grabbed ( what I
thought was the check book for the new account ) my check
book. I had gone to my manager and told her I needed some
cash and wanted to cash a cash to my work bank account from
the other bank's account where I do my banking. She signed
the check and said to go ahead with it. When I got home
that night, I realized that I had cashed a check on the
account I closed and not the new account - it was an honest
mistake. Upon realizing this, as soon as I got to work the
next morning, I notified my manager about the mistake. She
said not to worry about it. Several days later I was
contacted my the corporate security dept and I explained
that it was completely an honest mistake - I was told that
it was ok, to pay back the cash - which I did immediately -
and to just carry on with my life. This morning a
completely different song was being sung. Corporate
Security called again and questioned me as if I was a
criminal - I explained to them again, that it was an honest
mistake and that as soon as I realized what had happened I
contacted my manager as soon as was possible. I was
instantly terminated - I was not even given the benefit of
the doubt for all my honesty. My manager was rude about it -
told me to "just get your bag and leave out the back
door". It was completely embarassing and uncalled for. I
was not trying to steal money from my company - I believe I
did the right thing letting them know about the mistake. My
manager wouldn't even let me speak to the Human Resources
dept. She said I should do it when I get home and not to
touch anything from the company. I believe I have a case
against my company - I need to know how to go about
    pursuing it
