    Post: Overtime work

    Posted by CC on 2/14/06

My supervisor and the Director of the Division asked me if I
could help out in one of the project. The project required
overtime work plus weekend work (7 days) straight for 4
months. They both told me that if I will helps I could took
sometimes off. However, after working long hours and
weekends through 4 months the project finally completed.

I contact the office manager to schedule a time off. She
immediately told me that I couldn’t take time off because I
am a salary employee (Eventhough the Director have informed
her before they talk to me). I explain to her the meeting
with the Director and the supervisor. She contacted to both
the Director and the supervisor to verify the meeting (she
act like she does not know anything). They both told her
that I need to take time off as they have told her. She
still insists it is illegal and she contact the HR dept
rather then discussed it with the Director or my supervisor
(working behind their back). The HR told her is illegal
according to the Federal Law that time off should take off
the same weeks. I told them How can I take time off that the
project required overtime and weekend work which is total to
208 hours. The Director and the supervisor contacted the HR
the HR still standing on their ground claiming it is
illegal. However, the HR finally decided to pay me 40 hours
of work for the 208 hours clocked in my time sheet (It was
happen in the State of Maryland- In one of the Private
Healthcare Sector). The project is nothing to do with my day
to day duties. However, I have the skill they need to
    complete the project.

    Questions:

    1. Is this illegal to work overtime event though my
supervisor and the director both asked me to work overtime
and weekend to complete this project? Any advise will must
    appreciate.
