"comp time" is illegal under federal law (FLSA) for NON-
exempt employees. basically, non-exempts must be paid cash
for their overtime hours (or, as HR lady says, take "comp
time" in the same week as the extra hours are worked).
however, you mention you're a "salaried" employee. this is
often used to refer to "exempt" (overtime-exempt) employees.
if you're an "exempt" employee, there are no limits (or
rules) about comp time. you work extra, your boss gives you
time off, you get your salary, no problem.
otherwise (if you're non-exempt), you must be paid cash for
your overtime work and cannot "bank" the hours or take "comp
time" sometime in the future.
