Conference to Focus on Top Legal – Business Challenges
Facing California’s Construction Industry in 2006
Cerritos, CA - On Tuesday, May 11, 2006 from 8:00 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel Towne Center,
Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo will hold its 2006
Contractors Legal Forum to spotlight legal and business
challenges facing California’s multi-billion dollar
construction industry.
UCLA Anderson Forecast Senior Economist Christopher
Thornberg will deliver the morning’s keynote address at the
conference. Dr. Thornberg will focus on the cooling of the
housing market and its impact on residential and commercial
construction in Southern California. The afternoon keynoter,
Rick Land, chief engineer and deputy director for project
delivery at the California Department of Transportation,
will talk, among other things, about Prop. 42 and how it
will affect future bidding opportunities for public works
projects. Passed in 2002, Prop. 42 permanently dedicates
revenues from the state’s share of gasoline taxes to traffic
congestion relief, city street repairs, county road repairs,
mass transit and intercity rail, and new highway and transit
capital investments.
The conference will also feature sessions on hot-button
issues for construction companies, according to Mr. Thomas
Kovacich, partner at Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo
and chair of the conference. He said that the rising tide of
wage and hour claims, new union tactics, changes in
liability rules for job site injuries projects and payment
collection are big concerns among contractors. “What we’ll
be offering at this forum is updated, essential information
that helps address these concerns,” added Kovacich.
