Post: Wisconsin employer holding paycheck

Posted by Katie on 7/29/06
Hello, I worked for a bakery in Milwaukee, WI for five days. I quit without notice, because the owner was yelling at me in front of customers and impossible to work with. I was not under contract or anything; I was making an hourly wage at $7 an hour. The pay period ended last Saturday and the checks were supposed to be avaliable then. When I telephoned the bakery to see if they were avaliable, I was told that they weren't and that mine would be mailed to me. I live in Milwaukee as well and find it pretty implausible that the check would get lost in the mail; it has been exactly a week and I still have not received my check. What are the proper actions to take? How long can she withhold the check from me?
