Dear Patricia: First of all, please accept my and a grateful
nation's thanks for your son's service. Because of that, we
are free to write whatever we want on chatboards like this.
However: you have absolutely no recourse Ma'am! I am sorry to
be the bearer of bad news. Now: I have no doubt that your son
was refused employment because of the ex- father-in-law
connection but that's considered 'at will' employment, which
most jobs are.
'At-will' means just what it sounds like; it means that
employers can be as petty, or stupid, or jealous,
or...WHATEVER, they want and that is all perfectly legal.
They can fire/refuse to hire you because they don't like you,
they can do it because you're better looking than they are and
that's all 'at will'.
What they can't do is fire you in violation of federal law,
and that's for race, or sex, or for disability.
So the bottom line here is: the Water Company loses, because
your son is a Marine with an honorable discharge AND THEY'RE
TOO STUPID TO GRAB HIM UP. So Patricia: I encourage your son
to see this as a 'favor', and I mean that sincerely. Anyone
who has made it through Marine boot camp, has served honorably
and now has an honorable discharge, has extraordinary
qualities which can be better used in an employment setting
which KNOWS THEY'RE LUCKY TO GET YOUR SON.
So: tell him to take this as a lucky turn-down; and encourage
him to keep on keepin' on. God preserved him for a purpose;
and by the way I find prayer to be a great job-hunting-aid.
Good luck, and please let me know what he finds. Best,
Attorney-Nurse.
