Re: Peanut and nut and may contain nut ban in public school

I can understand why you might feel this way towards this ban on peanuts and other nuts. However, the reason that peanuts and tree nuts might be banned from school is because in some cases, the smell itself of the nuts can send one who is allergic into shock. Not because, as you have suggested that those with peanut or tree nut allergies might feel left out. I have many allergies other than peanuts. They include soy other legumes such as chickpeas, eggs, pollen, dust and mold. I have never had as many problems with all my other allergies combined when compared to my peanut allergy. But I do not believe that, pre-schoolers should be shielded from their allergies. Eating habits are developed at a very young age. Hence, these children (and their families) should be taught to read food labels and practice other habits, which would save his/her life in the future such as caring an Epi-Pen. Children who are not allergic to these nuts should be taught not to force those who are to eat the nuts. Also, there may be a peanut free zone in the cafeteria but not an all out ban. Also, it is not possible to send each and every one of us into a special school. Most of us do not have any serious health issues other than this allergy (and maybe asthma.)I live a fairly normal life (I am now 15) and luckily, I have learned to take care of myself and live with this allergy. PS. 2 out of 160 or 1 out of 80 kids is a fairly huge statistic for an allergy. Still, instead of just banning peanuts, children should be taught to deal with it.
