I agree with you, and of course I'd preface that by saying I
am very sympathetic to the needs of the children/parents with
the severe allergy. Our preschool just notified us of a
similar ban (4-weeks before school starts!), and we're as
upset about their process as the ban itself. They solicited
no feedback from either the Parent's School Board or from any
of the other parents. Of 160 kids in the school, we are aware
of only two children who actually have the severe allergy.
Last year they had policies and procedures in place to deal
with the safety issues, and there were no incidents. Now they
feel a total ban is the only solution to increase the safety
margin. We're disappointed at the failure to communicate,
much less compromise. Many parents agree with us, while
others look on us as if we're the problem. I just can't see
treating my child as if they also have a life-threatening
allergy. What's next on the severe allergy horizon? I would
think that reasonable and sensible policies could be
developed that don't attempt to shift the liability burden to
the 99% of the children without the problem. We've opted to
voice our opinions and develop support for a compromise that
meets everyone's concerns.
