I agree with Mike in the the laws have to be changed. why should
you be responsible for a child you did not choose to conceive?
(Theological concerns aside) Why should custody automatically be
given to the mother? Because the male was careless enough to engage
in unprotected sex this is now understood and accepted society wide
as a consequence for that action? now the male without any rights,
mother (by having to make the decision to conceive, abort or adopt
in the first place and suffer the consequences of that
decision...unless she's just looking for a sperm donor), and the
child who may be unwanted, mistreated, etc are all going to suffer.
And what if the man decided he wanted to have the child and the
woman didn't...is it then murder if the woman aborts? And what if
she does go ahead and conceive even though she doesn't want it,
shouldn't she be entitled to monetary compensation as a paid
babymaker for the father? and then hand over full custody to the
father? why can't we as a society insist upon a legal contract
prior to sexual itercourse spelling out who will be responsible for
the care of the potential child? Perhaps that would kill the mood.

I think if Roe vs wade is to be upheld, and a woman has the right
to choose, why shouldn't a man have the right to choose as well?
Course, i agree with the whole pounding the dead beat dads and the
immorality of not taking responsibility for your children...but
that's a moral issue, not a legal one.

The motives for Mike's post...whether he has been saddled with
support payments or is a dead beat dad...or loving father, or
childless do not concern me. his argument still has some merit,
although much of it I find absurd.

I will have to review the posts more in depth, and reconcile my own
contradictory opinions on the issue before I post further. But I do
believe all heterosexuals engaging in sexual activity should be
invested in the resolution of this truly intolerable situation.
