Post: SSA reports me as being dead
Posted by Chad on 3/15/05
The SSA reported me deceased approximately 3 years ago. They've listed my SSN in the Death Master Index, and have published my full name & SSN on the internet. Up until they reported me dead I had a perfect credit rating, and now I have zero credit and I can not obtain credit due to my 'deceased' status. Numerous attempts to rectify the situation via contact with the SSA has proved unfruitful, as they refuse to speak with me over the telephone (as they say they can't verify my identity). This has caused me a great deal of financial distress and I have now been the victim of identity theft due to their posting my name & SSN on the Death Master Index online. As a tax payer (whose tax payments aren't getting credited to my SS account), this is completely outrageous. I attempted to call dozens of attorneys throughout the Phoenix area, and not one single attorney will handle a case of this nature. I'd like to sue the SSA for damages - they've ruined my credit rating, they've ruined my life - and now I am unable to even travel out of the country without fear of being arrested or detained (as my 'dead' status is attached to my passport). How can they do this to me without even a death certificate or proof of some kind? The SSA wanted me to travel over 120 mile away to a main office to deal with this situation, & that is unacceptable. Even if I do go down there, they won't promise that they will issue me a new SSN, and my current one has been stolen & otherwise compromised.
