You were working for and on behalf of the appointed lawyer.
No violation of law there-you had to look at the files.
It's not your job to contact people or dispose of the files.
That's the job of the appointed attorney. If you feel it is
necessary you could send someone a letter and tell
them "Your file from attorney X's office now deceased is in
the custody of attorney Y who was appointed by the court to
administer the affairs of attorney X's office. You or your
present attorney may contact attorney Y at (address phone
number)."
I should warn you here and now that you can NOT realize any
personal gain from any interaction with any of the deceased
attorney's clients, or from any information you might have
gained from reading those files. You also cannot disclose
any information you get from the files as they are
privileged.
