Re: In search of legal actions to take about child support

What state are you in? Are you receiving public assistance?
In Michigan, if you are receiving public assistance and the
state (Medicaid/Medicare) has paid for the cost of the
birthing, they are quick to assist in determining paternity
and ensuring support for the child.
Is the father on the birth certificate? If not, will he
sign an Affidavit of Parentage? If not, in Michigan, you
can go to the court and request that a Paternity Action been
initiated; the courts here will order a blood test, and if
he is determined to be the father, an Order of Custody will
issue (based upon a variety of factors concerning the
parental fitness of both parties). Also, the non-custodial
parent will be Ordered to pay support for the child, as well
as maintain health insurance that may be available to them.
The non-custodial parent will receive reasonable visitation
rights.
Normally, the circuit court for the county in which the
child was born (or you reside) will have a family division,
and perhaps a Friend of the Court. Begin there. There are
waivers for certain filing fees available if you cannot
afford them.
Best of luck.
