well... lying to hospital personnel that she's his "wife" is
not the way to go.
In the eyes of the law: She's a stranger.
And I'm guessing that the hospital has strict rules about
telling strangers anything about a patient. And I'm
guessing that the hospital has strict rules that only the
next of kin is entitled to receive info about his/her
relative.
Although not clear from your post, if he's awake, alert &
competent to make legal decisions, he can give her a power
of attorney for many things, including the power to make
health care decisions for him.
If he's not alert, awake & incompetent for one reason or
another (i.e. too many drugs), there's nothing she can do.
It's too late for that.
It's good that you recognize that life's not fair.
