Post: How do I collect interest owed on child support arrearages?
Posted by Linda on 7/22/10
After my daughter's father and I divorced, his payment of
child support only occurred when the state of Florida was
able to find out where he was working and garnish his
wages. I received no support for a number of years. During
this time, my county in Florida has added interest on the
arrearages to the tune of over $16, 000.
My daughter is over 18 and my ex still owes almost $5000 in
arrearages as well as the $16,000 in interest. When I spoke
to the state of Florida's Child Support Enforcement
division, they say they only show the $5000 as what is owed
in the case. So, I called the county, and they told me I
had to go after my ex for the interest but could not do so
while my case is being handled by Child Support
Enforcement.
Can anyone clarify what my rights are and how I can get a
judgment/enforcement on the $16,000 worth of interest that
has accrued over the years?
Thank you
