Dear Paul,
Once you have acquired J-1 status and are subject to the two
year residence requirement it may be impossible to change to
another non-immigrant status or to permanent residence
status. Moreover, reinstatement to F-1 is impossible if your
visa expired. Therefore, keep your F-1 status valid, while
your application is pending for J-1 you must be registered
for a full course of study in the first available semester
or Quarter at the school you attend if your J-1 is granted,
the next time you leaves the country (at the end of the
semester)and you must apply for a J-1 visa stamp at a U.S.
Embassy or consulate before re-entry you must have proof of
health and repatriation insurance.
If the I-94 card is marked for D/S, and the I-20 was issued
at the school where you previously attend the International
Office of that school can help with status change. If the I-
94 is not marked with D/S but instead has an expiration date
the change of status application can not be completed until
the I-94 card are corrected.
Two things you should consider:
1. Work with the International Student Office of the School
that you're planning to enrol at(If you previously enrolled
in another school you must inform them that you're changing
school).
2. Or hire a good immigration attorney to work with you.
Thanks
