Post: forgot to add

My son in law forgot to add his newborn daughter to his
existing family health insurance policy
(BlueCrossBlueShield of Michigan) within the 30 day period.
He tried to add her on at day 35 (when he remembered) but
was told it was too late, and they had no coverage for her.
They paid for the delivery and the newborn hospital stay,
so how can they deny coverage now? He said they told him it
was a law from the IRS?????
