Post: Artistic Reproduction of Copyrighted Material

This is possibly a simple question but I can't seem to find
an answer to it:
I painted a picture of "HAL", the lovable computer from
Stanley Kubrik's, "2001: A Space Odyssey". The painting
exactly resembles a still shot from the film but contains
no physical elements of the still. Would reproduction and
sale of my painting constitute an infringement of the
film's copyright?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
