    Hi,

    Go for a Ph.D. only if you love the subject and you forsee
    the need to do research in that area in the future. If you
    only want go to grad school as part of a plan to practice
    patent law in the future you might go insane in an open-ended
    graduate program. The vast majority of EE patent attorneys do
    not have EE Ph.D.s. Look up their backgrounds on the Internet
    sites of attorney directories to see this. Also, be aware that
    with no background in biological/biochemical science you are
    extremely unlikely to ever be able to do biotech patent work;
    for this area, yes, a biomedical Ph.D. is a big boost to career
    success (but not mandatory).
