It sounds as if you have something that could be the subject
of a patent. Assuming you are in the US, Nolo publish a book
called Patent It Yourself, which is quite good if you want to
handle it yourself. Alternatively you could use a patent
attorney or a patent agent, such as yours truly!
Either way, the patent application would include a description
of the invention, some drawings, an abstract and a set of
claims. The claims define the limits of the monopoly. There is
a lot more to it than this, and I won't attempt to cover it
all here.
