I did a similar thing. i am now a law student.

However, I would suggest you do the patent bar now because
you will could be hired as an agent and get law school paid
for. Sometimes you can even arrange to get hired and support
to do the patent bar exam.

you should see if you can get into the legal group of your
present company. There is an incredible "experience" hump to
get over in order to get hired as a patent person. People
lacking experience are disdainded because it requires so much
effort to train them. If you are already in place it might be
easier to get the experience where you are now.

Chemical patent agents unlike biological patent agents (at
least in this area) are in great demand.
