Go to a well known upper Tier 2 law school and get grades no lower than B+. Try be within the top 5 people of your class. Do law review and moot court. I do not think it will hurt that much if you go at night as long as you get the grades to be competitive. Law is a CREDENTIAL driven profession. Law is very different from engineering. All engineers get decent jobs at graduation, and nobody really cares about your school or grades. That is beacuse their is a demand for engineers. On the other hand, the legal market is FLOODED with lawyers. This is why law firms can get away with demanding top schools and the top 10% of class. Remember that there are many lawyers earning less than an entry level engineer's starting salary. Only about 10% of all lawyers earn the big law firm bucks. Talk to as many practicing lawyers as you can before you make the investment in law school. Here is some more stuff to read, but remember it is biased by a recruiter. http://www.nylawyer.com/lawlorn/
