IP law firms are full of geeks who happen to have law degrees. Many of them wouldn't feel comfortable about the idea of working for a general practice firm. There again, in some of the latter the IP department may feel somewhat detached from the rest of the firm, in many cases because they are all there as the result of a merger. It's very trendy for general practice firms to suddenly acquire a ready-formed IP department. In the past, none of the firms that dominated IP were general practice, but it's gradually changing.
