I graduated summa cum laude from a Community College in Lake County with an Associate of Applied Business in Paralegal Studies Degree in May of 2003. After sending over 100 resumes and a handful of fruitless interviews I was forced to work in a factory through a temporary agency making $10 per hour with no benefits. I had 23 years of service at GE prior to getting my paralegal degree and because of a layoff in 2001 enrolled in the Paralegal Program at Lakeland. When I left GE I was making $17.80 an hour. I was getting to the point where I had to get over the fact that I had such a good job for so many years and had apparently chosen the wrong field to pursue as a solution to my layoff. THERE IS A GOD! After 3 months of factory work, circumstances at GE enabled them to hire me back.I now make $20 an hour, have my 23 years back PLUS 1 because they covered me for a year of my layoff, and enjoy 5 weeks of vacation annually plus 4 paid personal days. I TAKE NONE OF THIS FOR GRANTED though and will return to Lakeland for spring semester to begin the prerequisites for the Respiratory Therapy program lest I should be laid off in the future from GE and find myself in the cold again.
