Post: Outsourcing patents to India

There has been a lot of press about outsourcing patent work (drafting and prosecution) to India and some other countries where engineers from top institutions will work for $10k a year. In fact many startups are seem to be telling their U.S. patent lawyers 'thanks, but no thanks' or 'don't even tell me about patent services -- I'll do it in India.' Is anyone else seeing this trend first hand. If someone is involved with it how is the quality (not that the courts or patent office care for non- biotechnology applications)? Also, should people in the U.S. bother getting patent prosecution experience anymore if this is the future? rsu
