    You need to read your lease agreement. If it states that
    subsequent increases to monthly rent will also include the
    increase to be added to your existing security deposit, then
    yes, it's legal. If not, then no. However, since you're
    probably now on a month-to-month lease, be aware that the
    landlord can terminate your lease if you choose not
    to "comply".

    IMHO: If you cannot afford it, it's time to move.
