In most states, the worst that could happen to you if you simply took the personal property for yourself is the person could bring a civil suit against you, which of course would be extremely unlikely. That being said, you always want to have yourself covered legally, so I recommend signing something in writing (like a lease agreement) with anyone who might be using a property of yours for storage.
