Post: 30 Day Notice Before Collections

Posted by Dave Hamblin on 7/17/08
I moved out of a rental back in February of this year. I still owed my last months rent ($350) so Coldwell Banker said they would send me a bill along with my deposit. I received a bill for $2000 and no deposit money back on July 7th. They charged me for March, April, May, and June. They also charged me for damages to the house. Now, three people lived there for five years before I moved in. All but one moved out when I moved in. The place had serious problems but was cheap. They never cleaned or fixed anything prior to my moving in. I filled out a damages sheet and turned it in when I received my key to move in. I lived there for six months and moved out in February. The last guy was still living there for a few more months after I left. He has yet to receive any bill for the damages. Coldwell says they can't find the sheet I turned in with all of the damages and I did not make a copy. The Coldwell people told me to try to contact the other people who moved out and collect money from them. Why? Why would I be the one responsible for these damages? What recourse can I take against Coldwell Banker? Can someone please help me out? I know very little about these matters. Thanks, Dave
