Post: do estate agents have to show receipts?

Posted by riky Jobson on 8/18/06
Hello,
Im just wondering if someone can help me with a quick
issue. Having moved out of a property recently, some
friends of mine were expecting their full deposit back,
but the estate agency (based in UK) have come up with
several costs so they only have to pay back less than 50%
of the deposits. These costs are, for example, for a
broken couch which was of VERY poor quality in the first
place and broke throughout the tenancy. The breakage was
known about for several months by the estate agency, who
failed to act upon it. However, it was less than 1 year
old (new when they moved in) and surely still in warranty
and should not have cost anything to replace.
Subsequently the estate agents are refusing to provide
copies of the receipts for any of these costs, saying it
is not their policy.
Do they have any legal obligation to prove that the money
is going where they say it is? because surely it could be
fraudulant activities otherwise.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise on this matter,
Riky
