Post: Crazy Landlord

I rent an industrial unit. It's a small business that does
not get much income and yes I have often been late with the
rent. I pay it as soon as I can and have never complained
about the late fees and I always kept a calm and civil, yes
sir no sir thank you when speaking with the landlord
The problem is he is nuts, if the late is rent he comes to
my business and starts a hussy fit like a 2 YO. He has
actually chased away customers, and a possible partner who
wanted to move in and split the rent left after hearing
about his behavior. That action alone has cost me thousands
and crushed any plans of expanding this year. He yells and
curses and other wise acts like schoolyard bully. He has
tried to hit or touch me with his cane, twice in my office
shoving the hook of the cane under my nose and once in the
parking lot poking it out the window of his car all three
times if I had not moved he would have hit me.
It’s 6 month later (after the worse physical threats) and I
was talking to him in a calm manner telling him the abusive
behavior has got to stop. I told him he has a legitimate
reason to be angry with me and even evict me but can’t he
keep it business like.
That made him mad and he goes off on a verbal tirade again
Today he comes buy and raises my rent by $100. I told him
for an extra $100 the abusive behavior has got to stop. He
goes off on another tirade telling me I cant tell him what
to do. I told him I had already spoken to some customers who
were a real estate lawyer and the police (Both True) and
they confirmed that his actions are over the line of normal
business and illegal.
He walked out as I said illegal saying to get out of his
face and piss off and he is the landlord and I can’t tell
him what to do.
Right now I have three options the customers advised me
Charge him Legally with menacing and threatening assault,
the police officer said if he did it again to not step out
of the way and then pick up the phone and call 911. but that
was 6 months ago
I could file a civil case for the verbal abuse and scaring
away business
I was talking to some one retied from the DEA The landlord
says he does not care what the tenets do as soon as they pay
the rent on time. The smell of dope comes into my shop from
some ware else, it is so obvious some one has to have told
the landlord. Most of the units show signs of being modified
to hide secret rooms with extra power. Tenants who come in
and work mostly at 2 am and run away when I try to say hi to
them in the day time. I could make a few calls and cost him
tens of thousands of dollars to keep the city from
confiscating his building and or have the EPA tear it down
if the find a history of his renting to drug makers.
