Post: Termination

I am needing some advice as to my situation. I was terminated from my job of 23 months on June 14th 2002. In my department we would handle hotel contracts then get them to go live via our site. I was in a supervisory position and most of the contracts started with me. I was told during my termination that I had entered a mistake on one of the hotel rates and one of the Tax rate plans and that I was responsible for letting them go live and costing the company money. My argument is that because we were required to have a triple review process consisting of me writing up the contract for other data entry members to enter, then they would pass that contract back and forth between eachother and one would enter, one would verify those entries, and then another would make any necessary corrections then another would verify again (if needed) then another would publish the property then check it live on our site. My concern is that I have documented proof that I was not the person responsible for letting these mistakes go live, yet I was terminated for everyone's mistakes, because the whole department had their hands on those specific contracts. Yet I was the only one terminated and no one else was repremanded or disciplined in any way. I was never given the chance to defend myself or to try and prove otherwise. Eventually I did prove that I was not responsible but yet I am still treated as if I was at fault and my termination will still remain on my records. Isn't that defamation of character? Is there anything that I can do legally? I am also certain that they will deny my unemployment even though my work performance was not at fault. I would like to note also that during my 23 months of employment I have seen 15 people come and go though my department and I had been there the longest out of any data entry personnel. I was up for my vacation in July 2002. I have spoken to a lawyer but he basically said there was nothing I could do, but I find that really hard to believe. There has been an injustice here and the law has to be able to work for people like me. How can a company play God and just get away with it. They are messing with people's lives.
