Post: Wisdom teeth removal complications
Posted by Brooke on 5/07/09
My question involves medical malpractice in the state of: Tennessee. I went in on May 1st to have my wisdom teeth removed, I was not put to sleep, but given a local. I screamed a lot during the procedure, 2 teeth hurt while the other 2 did not. I went in for a post op on May 4th. I complained that my tonuge and throat were numb on the right side, I could not open my mouth past a finger width, I was having issues swallowing anything, and could not speak clearly. I was told that I had "Hot Spots" on my face, to put ice on them and to gargle warm salt water. I asked if I had infection, if I needed antibiotics, I was told no, just to use salt water and ice. (The dentist never looked in my mouth bc it would not open, did not set up a post op, not even after I asked.) On May 5th, I called back in, still no change in my progress. I was told to put ice on for 30 min. and off for 30 min. On May 6th, I went in to see my family physician, I was told that I have infection in my jaw joints, and that I should not be numb on my tongue and my throat anymore. I was also told that I should have been given antibiotics from the dentist and that this situation seemed very odd. I was also set up with an appointment with an ear nose and throat specialist, I still can not talk and I am still numb.
Should I follow up on this with a lawyer? I have/ will be missing one week of work, I have not been able to eat more than mush or talk for one week when I was told recovery would only be a couple of days. Thank you for your help.
