Post: Mother Had Hernia Surgery, Now has Ruptured Bowels!!

Posted by Son on 1/25/08
My mother has a hernia surgery on january 9, 2008 (WED).
Drove there on her own and walked in on her own. Had the
surgery and the Dr. said it went perfect, no complications.
3 hours later she was up and walking with pain of course.
She said she was in pain but felt it would go away. next
morning (Jan 10 THURS), still tons of pain, not able to
urinate, terrible ab. pain and hurts to move. They said she
needed to get tough and get walking or they needed to move
her to a nursing home due to the room. The family was upset
and said NO WAY!. Next morning (Jan 11 FRI) still unable to
urinate, now breathing problems, Kidneys starting to shut
down, very severe pain all over including back. They did a
cat scan and found nothing, gave her bigger dose of pain
medicine to calm her down. Next morning (Jan 12 SAT) still
unable to urinate, kidneys failing, breathing problems, low
oxygen in blood, having speach problems now, cant move!!!
The family basically flips out and says do something now!!,
they schedule a move to a bigger hospital in Michigan (she
is in Michigan)1 1/2 hours away. Next mid morning (Jan 13
SUNDAY!!) they finally moved her to new hospital and
scheduled ANOTHER cat scan. cat scan as all the rest show
nothing, they decide for emergency surgery to check out the
problem due to the significant failures now 4 DAY LATER!!!
They find her bowels were perforated and not noticed, then
not checked when the problems started. The new surgeon
opened up and she now had major kidney problems, major
infections, had to remove intestines, install colostomy
bag, and leave the wound open from neck to waist. It is now
January 25, 2008 and she still lays in the critical care
ward with breathing tube, eating tube, kidney problems, one
lung starting to fail, open ab wound, infections and now a
sign on the doors that says mrsa. She is confused and
doesnt know what happened. My family is very upset even
though we are there for my mother at this time. Is this
negligence on the first surgeons part not to investigate
the problem, then send her to another hospital? Please let
me know.
