    Post: HIPPA violation

    Posted by Jane on 2/21/08

My husband and I are Catholic and decided because of
financial and health issues for me to get my tubes tied.
Feeling guilty bout it, we vowed to not tell anyone. As we
didn't wish to be judged by anyone but our maker! So we
told the sitter and my sister that I was supposed to be
getting a D&C. Well I eneded up with some complications
and it wasn't a day surgery, ended up staying. BUT 5:00
day of surgery, MY MOTHER, of whom I am not close to,
called me and said she found out what "I had done". After
playing dumb, found out she called the Catholic hospital
to 'check in' on me. (They won't do birth control there as
an elective) And they said I was not a patient. She
persisted and was connected to the day surgery clinic and
was placed on hold and someone came back on the line and
said that she is at "Hospital B" for a tubal"
How can that happen?? I immediately asked for the
administration, they did an inquiry and believed it to be
from a traveling anesthesiologist (sp?) surgery posting.
The secret telling hospital could not 'find' the person my
mother spoke with. They sent me a letter of apology.
Unfortunately, I have been feeling depressed since this
happened. This happened on Dec 21,2007 and I had a
Christmas gathering at my home! I was and have been
ashamed that this has happened and I cannot let it go. My
regular doctor has prescribed Prozac and I haven't noticed
any change. I feel my rights were violated. I signed a
whole bunch of papers before the surgery regarding these
rights!!! What can I do? The only proof I have is my
mother's testimony and a phone bill that she
called "Hospital A". And the people I spoke with initially
after it happened. Somebody please advise.
