Post: first offense for petty theft

My daughter got caught shoplifting. She just received a
summons for court for petty theft. Do we need to get a
lawyer for her. It is her first offense, she is not a
minor(over 18), and the merchandise was $199. We are not
sure what to do or expect. Is there a chance she will be
put in jail? Please help!
