I want to judge interest in an idea presented to me by a
fellow attorney. For about ten years I have pursued health
insurance companies and other third party payers for
hospitals on wrongfully denied and delayed claims. This
other attorney believes that I could parlay this
experience into helping fellow attorneys who do personal
injury work. For example, I worked on case with him where
a young girl was injured in a car accident. She did not
have her insurance card with her when she presented to the
Hospital 1. Hospital 1 was not paid by the health
insurance company because it did not have insurance
information. At Hospital 2, her family provided the
insurance information but the claim was held up for other
information. Based my experience, I saw that there was
likely insurance and that I could use my contacts at this
health insurance carrier to obtain the girls correct
insurance ID to get Hospital 1 paid and then I knew how to
obtain the information that the insurance company needed
to pay Hospital 2. I got both bills paid and put an
additional $7,000.00 in the girl’s pocket. My colleague
says that attorneys generally know little about how the
health care/insurance system works and he thinks a lot of
money is left on the table because of it. I’d love to hear
other opinions on this before I expend energy to market
this idea.
