Post: who can open mail from a charity group at a intstallaion

I have a question. We recieve mail from a charity group and on the package it states if person is no longer there keep the box, share with everyone, or give to a priest. I talked to the charity organazation and they stated to share with everyone. Here is my question and situation. Based on gifts from this charity we noticed mold on a few items that we sent. Can we open the box and remove the item from the box that is bad and then share with everyone as long as the intent was to remove the bad item and distribute to everyone in the group. Their is no personal gain from trying to remove the items that were bad. Is this illegal since the box was stated to share with everyone and keep the box. Can anyone from the group it was mailed to open it and then share it? Is this legal or illegal. Again there is no name tied to the box and the names that were on the box says not to send back to the organizaion and to share with the group. based on them it says share with group and interpreted that anyone can open it. There has been no guidance on who was to the approval authority to open it so I understand anyone can open it and distribute it equally as long as personal gain of opening it was not the intent on safety for others. Is this legal or illegal?
