Post: Employer opening pay check

Posted by Susan Miller on 8/19/10
I am not really familiar with the law and thought this was unprofessional and questionable. Recently, I resigned from my job and had vacation time that was owed to me. A check from the corporate office mailed the money owed with the rest of employee checks to my specific branch. All checks sent are sealed in windowed envolopes with each employees home address. My supervisor had opened my check, removed it from the initial envolope and resent it to my address in a hand written envolope with the return address of that branch. I was not informed that the check was sent to that site, and the finance department was not contacted (had admin been suspisous of an error in recieving this check). Are there any laws to protect employees from this type of event?
