    Re: Employer opening mail

    Posted by Lisa on 8/31/06

My husband has experienced this for years. He works for our city's historic
organization. They have always opened his mail, as did his last two city employers -
one a convention bureau and the other a state museum. Today he received a call from
the Mayor of our city who needed to know if my husband was going to attend an
important event which was being held in three hours. My husband was even asked to
speak at this event! Needless to say, his employer had seen the letter, opened it
and didn't bother to alert my husband to this event. This was even a work related
event having to do with the history of this city! The letter was sent to my husband,
through his work place 2 weeks ago. This is only one example. We have found through
the years that some of my husband's employers have read and not deliver letters to
him in efforts to sabotage his career. Luckily we have been made aware of this on
many occasions. My husband is well liked and well educated in his field and
sometimes his "superiors" find that they are not quite up to par when compared to
his knowledge and expertise in his field. There are many instances when you work in
the public section that you receive letters through your work address
marked "attention:" If you give tours, or make historic speeches while representing
your city or your place of work, then mail has to come to you at your workplace
address. Unfortunately my husband's workplace is different from the foundation that
actually receives the mail. They are the ones who open his mail and then either send
it on to his workplace or they decide not to send it. This certainly doesn't seem
legal especially when government entities are involved!
